Introduction
Pictured above is Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown, MA. One of the few places on the east coast where you can watch the sun set into the ocean.
This is where it all started for The Summer of 100 Beaches. This location was the inspiration for it all. Being relatively near my home yet a world away in terms of culture, recreation, natural beauty, and once you get there it’s all within a bike ride. I can get up in the morning and be at the beach by 10am. Then go get lunch. Then ride to another beach. And then another beach. I can ride 20-30 miles a day and enjoy it all. The Summer of 100 Beaches started here.
North Truro is near the very end of Cape Cod and is one of the best spots anywhere for beaches, biking, culture, scenery, and spectacular seaside parks. Most of this part of the Cape is part of the National Seashore. What makes this location one of the best is that you can park your car when you get there and you won’t use it again until you leave.

This area has a lot to offer. It is a vacation area that is packed to the breaking point with options. Recreation, museums, culture, great food, and beaches.

Cape Cod is largely a sand bar. One big beach. This is a typical roadside view.

Herring Cove Beach is a favorite. It’s on the bay side so the wave are not that big if there’s any at all. Whales can sometimes be seen spouting off this shore. It’s one of the few places where you can see the sun set into the ocean and you can build yourself a fire. It’s part of the National Seashore system. It’s well maintained with great facilities. Sharks are rarely sighted here probably because there’s no seals here. There are seals on the ocean side which is a short distance away.

This is a great place to start your day with a coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Pictured below is a sandwich called “The Senator”. It’s a fried egg, cheddar cheese, ham, avocado, arugula, and spicy mayo on a jalepeno cheddar biscuit. Delicious!

This is less than 1/2 mile from the campground and an easy bike ride. There are two other places of note right next to The Salty Market. The first is an excellent dinner restaurant called The Captain’s Choice. After dinner you can then walk next door to Chequesset Chocolate where you can watch them making chocolate from raw cacao beans. Awesome chocolate!

This is interesting. It’s a baked stuffed clam without the shell. I’ve never seen that before. Apparently they were getting charged $5 for each empty shell to put clam into so they said the hell with it and served it like this. It was excellent.

Seared scallops at Captain’s Choice. The scallops were fished from the ocean just a mile or so away.
Here’s a brief video of this little corner of North Truro with these restaurants.
Here’s a couple longer videos of the fantastic Provincetown Dunes bike trail. It’s awesome but can be challenging due to exposure to the sun. Here’s a map of the trails.
