Shining Sea Beach with Horseshoe Crabs

This is a day trip. No camping on this one. As I like to say, “I ride a bike. I’m not a cyclist.” I take lots of breaks at points of interest. There’s lots of points of interest on this one. This trip is about 22 miles and incorporates the Shining Sea Bikeway. It diverts to follow the shoreline into Woods Hole and picks up the bike path again to Falmouth. There we meander around to various beaches and coastal riding.

Meet the Shining Sea Bikeway

The Shining Sea Bikeway is a scenic and popular bike path located in Falmouth, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. It is named in honor of Katherine Lee Bates who was from Falmouth, MA and wrote the words to America the Beautiful that included the phrase “sea to shining sea”. This picturesque trail stretches for approximately 10.7 miles, offering cyclists and pedestrians a beautiful journey through Cape Cod’s natural beauty. The path runs parallel to the coastline, providing stunning views of salt marshes, woodlands, cranberry bogs, and, of course, the shining sea itself—the waters of Vineyard Sound and Buzzards Bay.

Bike Ride

Along the Shining Sea Bikeway, you’ll encounter various points of interest, including Nobska Lighthouse, Salt Pond Bird Sanctuary, and several sandy beaches like Surf Drive Beach and Falmouth Heights Beach. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for cyclists of all skill levels, making it an ideal destination for leisurely rides, family outings, or simply enjoying the Cape’s serene coastal environment. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking to explore the natural beauty of Falmouth and the surrounding area.
